Printer displayings returns and tabs as open squares

All of a sudden, both my pdf and Word prints come out with tabs and returns printing as open squares. Reset both printer (HP PageWide Pro 477dw) and macbook (11" air, early 2015), but no difference. All fonts validated. Switching to other fonts won't help. What else to try?

Solved, with help from HP. This turned out to be a driver problem that could be fixed easily, if you know how.

What I needed to do was open System Preferences / Printers & Scanners, click "+" to add a printer; in the dialog window select my printer; wait for it to update; then in the "Use" list, select "Generic PostScript Printer". A new printer icon shows up in the Printers & Scanners box -- use that one as default printer. Wew!
