How do I change the Apple ID to my Apple ID on a used ipad?

I was given a used ipad from a family member and want to change the apple id to my existing id. How do I do this?

You will need to contact the family member and have them do the following: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

There is no way that you can do it without their assistance.
