How to restore wifi connection for HP LaserJet printer?

I had to do some reconfiguration. In process I lost my wifi connection to HP LaserJet printer.

How do I go about restoring connection to the printer?

I have my wifi network and use Apple Time capsule as router.

Otherwise, I am lost how to go about this!

Printer Sharing is ON and says "can access my computer at: Me-MacBook-Pro.local"

but I don't know what this means.

Wi-Fi Direct Setup
Status = Enabled
Wi-Fi Direct Name (SSID) = DIRECT-f8-HP M203 LaserJet
IP Address = 192.168.223.1
Wi-Fi Direct Password = 12345678
Wi-Fi Direct Channel = 6
Connected Clients = 0

That's a breakthrough.

What you have to do next can be a little confusing. On your Mac's menu bar, click the Wi-Fi icon. There should be a network with the name corresponding to that printer's Wi-Fi Direct Name (SSID): DIRECT-f8-HP M203 LaserJet. Select it.

If you connect to that network, it will take you to that EWS page. You may be prompted for its password, which is also shown as 12345678. Once you can finally load that page, you should be able navigate through whatever options appear on it for the purpose of changing its IP address from whatever it is (192.168.223.1) to what I suggest: something like 10.0.1.100 would be a good idea.

While you do that, bear in mind your Mac will not be connected to the Internet. It will be communicating only with the printer. Nothing else.

When those changes are finally input, accepted, and applied (using whatever terminology it uses for "apply") you will then be disconnected from that webpage. In other words it will appear to become unresponsive because that page no longer resides at its previous address. The EWS page may or may not warn you that is what is going to happen, but when it happens, click your Mac's Wi-Fi icon again and choose your usual wireless network. That will restore your ability to connect to the Internet as you usually do.

The printer may need a moment or two to restart.

Then, you ought to be able to type 10.0.1.100 in Safari's URL field, and the EWS page should reappear. Or, at your option, you should be able to use the HP Easy Start program that could not find your printer last time.

If something goes wrong then be prepared to repeat all the above, come back here and post a reply describing your status.

Thank you. By rebooting I got back the Color Printer and a scanner.

I have managed to add the M203 printer but when I Print it only prints on the Color printer and not the M203!

When I ask to print 1 page, Printer window lists both printers, I select the M203, the icon for the M203 appears, but again it prints from the Color printer.

When say "Open Print Queue", the correct Name M203 appears;

when I select "Supply Levels", it shows the supply levels of the color printer CP1525

I dl the HP Easy Start and go thru the steps but get stopped at point where it displays my Color LaserJet.

So I search for HP LaserJet, HP LaserJet M203, LaserJet M but none is found.

Info is lengthy and confusing about connect.

I will have to look to see if I can find the manual to see how to "print the Information Page, and confirm that the device’s network name (SSID) starts with “HP-Setup”

If your device is not in HP Auto Wireless Connect setup mode and you are sure that you want to connect this device to your wireless network, then locate and select “Restore Network Settings” on the device’s control panel display."

etc. etc. etc.

Thanks again. I must take a break - I've been struggling with this for the last 4 hours!

From 10.0.1.15 down thru 10.0.1.1 I always got Safari cannot access that server.

When I type 10.0.1.8 thru, it takes me to the HP page for the HP Laserjet Color Printer CP1525nw which is the connected and functioning printer that is always activated whenever I try to Print from the M203dw Just black)

Again, I am going to have to interrupt for a couple of hours.

But this has seemed to get me further than anything else up to this point.

I will come back to continue - and hope you will too!

When I return I will do the 10.0.1.16 --> .50 trials in Safari!

Hi.

I tried all settings from 10.0.1.1 thru 10.0.1.50 -- The only one that worked was 10.0.1.8 to the HP page about my HP Color LaserJet CP1525nw.

I do not see what to try next.

If I follow you correctly, your suggestion is stated: "It may be worthwhile to investigate how to completely reset that printer to factory defaults... which I did not fully research from its documentation, but must be possible."

I found dvd for HPLaserJet Pro M203 in my stuff. I have been omitting the word "Pro" in my searches at HP. I'll go to HP Easy Start and see if inserting that "Pro" helps.

Nope, that didn't find anything.

I'll insert the dvd in MBP and see what comes up.

Nope, that was just a method for me to get HP Easy Start dl.

I hope tomorrow is another day!

Thank you. I tried that before and have now tried it again.

In one of the above posts from you I followed Manual page 74 and then Step 4.

The instructions seemed clear and I followed them (there was no "Go" button issue).

But the result was the image I got and posted in reply above that had the title "HP LaserJet M203-M206 Series".

I did not see IP address or "host name" on the page.

When I typed HP LaserJet M203-M206 Series, I got a Google page with ~10 referrals about HP LaserJet M203 printers.

I looked at those and followed up a few but did see any help.

I will probably need to go thru and check every referenced website from Google

and/or post my problem at HP Forum.

Oh Oh! I did that NVRAM Initialization thing again and this time got a 3 page printout

with (1) Configuration Report, and (2) Network Summary, 2 pages.

All 3 pages are packed with data!

Reading thru and selecting what looks "relevant" to me (quotes):

Product Information looks good to me.

Wi-Fi Direct Setup --> Status = Enabled;

Wi-Fi Direct Name (SSID) = DIRECT-f8-HP M203 Laser Jet;

Connection Method = Manual;

Wi-Fi Direct Password = 12345678;

Connected Clients = 0

Product Settings:

Wired HW Address = 3c.52.82.bc.84.f5

Wireless HW Address = d8.0f.99.3a.e6.f8 (Printing is very dim & I am unsure about "0"

and if figures are separated by period or colons --> with magnifying glass it should be : instead of . [period]

Network In Use = None

Host Name = NPIBC84F5

IPv4 and IPV6 = Waiting for a wireless connection

On the Network Summary pages, most items = waiting for a network connection; Not Configured; Not Specified; Not connected.

The Network Name (SSID) is NOT correct; that has been deleted and a new Network hs been setup (which was a part of the "reconfiguration" I mentioned in 1st post!

Yes, the DIRECT-f8-HP M203 LaserJet is present in the list.

When I select it, the icon seems to be searching for it but doesn't find it; it just keeps searching.

I had to re-select my ordinary network name to stop search and again permit me to come back here to post this reply.

! You’ve exceeded the posting limits. Please try again in a few minutes [in red!]

While the wi-fi icon was searching for DIRECT-f8-HP M203 LaserJet, in Network System Preference it said that I was connected to DIRECT-f8-HP M203 LaserJet and gave an IP address but it went away (as I came back to normal network so quick I couldn't capture it.

I repeated the attempted change in Network icon and did get the IP address: 192.168.223.100

What now?

Feb 27, 2019 7:51 PM in response to BDAqua

Thank you. I will try tomorrow.

I lack the particular USB cable the printer requires; it's the one with a connecter (bigger/squarer) different from the ordinary male/female USB cable ( I don't know the correct name of it).

I think it is this type:

  • This is how amazon.com describes it:【Universal Printer Cable】: JSAUX USB 2.0 Printer Cable is ideal for connecting your scanner, printer, server, camera such as HP et al. and other usb b devices to a laptop, computer (Mac/PC) or other USB-enabled device.

  • If you believe I am wrong, please correct me!!!

Feb 28, 2019 12:37 PM in response to John Galt

HALLELUJAH!!! Un-Believable!!!

Both to Galt and to BDAqua !!!

It was faster to buy a new USB2 Cable A to B, Male/Male than to accomplish the Promethean task of unravelling my hyper-Gordian knot of old cables.

But once plugged in and HP Smart launched, everything proceeded slick as could be

(although it seemed like HP was seeking all data from my shorts!).

HP LJ 203 works as my default printer and my HP LJ Color printer works normal, too.

I've been an Apple acolyte since '80's with early Macintosh. But this was most difficult problem I have ever had.

You all's help has been priceless! I'll mention you to Steve when I see him.
