Corrupt CR3 Images

When I import CR3 RAW images from my Canon M50 they import fine, but over time each one goes black. The underlying files seem ok and I can export the unmodified image fine.

When I go int Edit on one of the black images it takes a while to load but when it does I can edit it fine - but when I save it it goes black again.

It's as if there is some process running which is applying an edit to each file and corrupting them all over time - though as I say the underlying original is ok.

When I import JPEGS this behaviour does not happen and everything is fine.

I am running Mojave 10.14.2

Any ideas?

Cheers

This appears to be a memory issue. My current iMac with 16GB memory handles the files better that the iMac 27" i9 with 8GB memory but photos go black when unused memory drops to 3GB or less.

I used Memory Clean after importing photos and they were fine. The remaining memory dropped after viewing & editing each individual photo so running Memory Clean and closing down Photos periodically acts as a fix of sorts. For some reason the CR3 files are zapping far more memory than CR2 files.

Please post back if anyone has success using this method.

It should be working on 10.14.2. Is there a reason why you do not update to MacOS 10.14.3? It contains important security fixes.

I asked about the iCloud syncing, because there have been problems with the CR3 files on an iPad, but if you are working with the images only locally on your Mac that should not matter.

You are not by any chance running out of storage on your Mac?

Is your Photos Library on your system drive or on an external drive?

You may want to test, if your Photos Library needs repairing. Test with a new Photos Library in your Pictures folder and import a few photos for testing. Are you seeing the same problem in a new library?

Same here with a Canon EOS R.

I have a fix that works most of the time but it's labourious. Open black photo - hover over Edit - when message comes up 'Edit Photo' click edit - wait until the wheel at the bottom right corner of the photo has stopped spinning - if the image appears click Crop - Flip or go ahead and crop photo - Done, your photo may or may not show. Even if it does it could turn black again but should re-appear when clicking on Edit.

Very long-winded and an absolute pain. My 2019 27" iMac i9 has been returned for a refund for this and other faults. Come on Apple! I have a wildlife trip coming up and I'll have 2000+ shots to edit. Could take me the rest of my life.

I have overcome this issue, of sorts though the Photos app is now crashing for fun; 17 times at last count.

I've recently uploaded 6000+ RAW images from my Canon EOS R from a trip to Bulgaria and if I ensure there is at least 5 GB of memory when I'm editing no photos turn black. I regularly clean memory and quit the app after uploading which seems to help.

Frustrating and it doesn't bring back the photos I've lost, or the 2019 iMac I sent back, nor will I consider a replacement until this is fixed for good.

I've stopped seeing this problem, but that may be because I've started shooting Raw+JPEG. Most of the time I am happy with the JPEG so the Raw image never gets exposed in my Photo library. If I need to do an edit which needs the Raw image (and often they don't) I use that instead of the JPEG and it seems to be ok. The only overhead is storage as having the JPEG as well as the Raw image adds about 15% but that's well worth it not to lose any photos

I have the same issue, Canon M50, 10.14.4, all photos appear black. I also thought that it may be something to do with iCloud Photo Library sync, as they appear fine when initially imported, however I tested in another operating system with iCloud disabled and the same thing happened.

Don't bother ever shooting jpegs, so I have an entire month long holiday worth of photos that I haven't been able to import.
