FCPX file relink 'new file is not long enough' + wrong project

I'm having a problem when I relink some (not all) files on FCXP. Firstly if I select the clip and relink by pointing to an entire folder of files it relinks to a clip that doesn't even exist in that folder, if I then try to resolve this by relinking and picking the exact clip I receive this message

'The new file is not long enough to cover clip Clip 10 in event Looking at Rose'

Bizarrely the event it refers to is not the event I am working on, it is the event that this wrong clip is from.

To summarise: I have multiple events, in one event I am relinking a file and if I point to an entire folder of footage it relinks to Clip 10 that doesn't exist in that folder, if I relink by pointing at the exact file I want Clip 22 then it seems to think I am working on the event that contains Clip 10.

How do I fix this without having to delete the clip entirely?

Let's just recapitulate, to make sure we understand all the steps:

1) Select Clip 22 in the browser

2) File->Relink Files...

3) Clip 22, or rather the name of the file it is referencing, appears in the list

4) You click on Locate Selected, and navigate to the file you want to relink to

Is that correct? And still, it tries to relink a different clip?

Other than a possible mismatch of file names to clip names, I don't see a reason for this.

As always, when something weird happens, try deleting preferences, then reopen your library and see if things are working correctly.
