All Gmail messages show up as VIP

I have three email accounts on my iPhone. The third one was recently added. It's a Gmail account. Every message that comes into this account is classified as VIP. When I go to my VIP list, there is nothing indicating the Gmail account is included. None of the senders of these messages are on my VIP list. How do I get my Gmail account to use what is in the VIP list and not assume every message is VIP? I tried removing the account and re-adding it, but that didn't make any difference.

Even though you say iPhone does not have a feature to declare an account as VIP, that is exactly how my phone is operating. I have a VIP list with 15 senders on it. This list covered two different email accounts. I added my Gmail account to my phone. Now every message that comes into my Gmail account shows up in my VIP messages folder, even though none of the senders are listed in the VIP group. I tried deleting the account and re-adding it, but the same behavior persists.

Thank you for your message. As I was trying to describe another response, it appears I may be mis-representing my issue with how I have phrased it. And perhaps it is not necessarily related to the VIP designation. Let me try to describe the issue more specifically:

The Mail icon at the bottom of my phone has a red circle next to it with a number in it. This number has always represented the number of VIP messages that I have which are marked as "Not read". This is across all accounts. If I have 12 unread messages in one account, nothing shows up in that red circle unless one or more of them are from a VIP sender and that message hasn't been opened/read. As soon as I open the message, the number in the red circle decreases or goes away when it's zero.

Since I added the Gmail account, all unread messages for that account get included in the number that is in the red circle next to my Mail icon, even though they are not from VIP senders. When I got to the VIP inbox, I do not see the Gmail messages so maybe I was previously describing my problem the wrong way.

Perhaps there is a different solution to have the count of unread messages from my Gmail account not included in the Mail icon notification. In other words, I would like it to work the same as my other two email accounts.

Thank you and sorry for the earlier confusion.

Your understanding of VIP is not clear to me.

  1. VIP is not for Inbox it is for Sender
  2. VIP is not for Account
  3. What do you mean by "show up as VIP" is not clear. Starred?

I would suggest you to go and check your Gmail Web Account (https://mail.gmail.com)

Settings > Filters & Blocked Addresses (Tab)

Check the List of Filters that is creating this anomaly and Delete it.
