Transcoding media (proxy files) FROM the timeline?

I know one can't transcode media sitting in the timeline ... and:

I've got a big long feature doc. The original material was HD, for which no proxy files were needed.

A whole bunch of new 4K material was shot, for which I created proxy files.

I'm now adding in the new 4K material. Even though the final output will be HD, I need to be able to have everything in Proxy mode - to be able to actually run the 4K with the HD clips. So I want to be able to highlight the HD clips in the timeline and render out 'Proxy' versions ... so the whole section will ALL be Proxy for editing. BUT. I don't want to have to do this clip by clip up in the Browser, which would take forever. Has anyone a suggestion? All ears, Ben

Tom. Could do that. The issue is that there are hundreds of clips in the Browser. I don't want to transcode everything because it would swallow up too much drive space. I just want to transcode the clips we are actually using in the film. The film is virtually finished ... so I don't want to have to dump the whole thing onto a bigger drive just to make these few changes.

I've broken the film into 20 projects (chapters/timelines), created a compound of each of the 20 'chapters/timelines', then brought the 20 compound clips onto a single timeline to output the film. I'm trying to work with this original setup: meaning going into the compound 'chapter', adding or subtracting a few shots, but then returning to the overall timeline with the 20 compound 'chapters' to output the master. This is the reason I'd love to be able to decide which clips to transcode from within the timeline.

That I know. And in this case that's just fine. It's me not wanting to transcode the hundreds of shots-not-used just because I have to do the transcoding from the Browser. My little trick of trying to transcode a 'project' didn't seem to work.

It may have to be a one-at-a-time thing. Grr. Though I'm really enjoying this version of FCPX ... this was a film from a couple of years back and I just went through the whole 90 minutes in an afternoon and assigned all the audio to roles and lanes and in a few hours I'm ready to do a nice tweak of the mix. And! FCPX is letting me flip the lanes up and down with no issues. The last time I was doing that FCPX would crash regularly if I tried to change the order of the lanes.

If I find any magic button for the transcoding I'll report back here. Thank you Tom.
