"You Can't Change Bookmarks now" error message

I have this problem on my MacBook pro running 10.14.3 using Safari 12.0.3

Following instructions on other thread, I created a new admin account and there I was able to add a bookmark with no problem. So I ran etrecheck as directed, however I can't attach the results as I get an error message since it's over 5000 characters. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Launch Agents/com.apple.SafariBookmarksSyncer.plist .  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

If you turn off the VPN software, does that help?

I would get rid of Trusteer. It doesn’t work well under Mac OS.

Try suggestions given here. Get help using iCloud Bookmarks and Reading List - Apple Support

What happens if you try clicking the Page/File button at the bottom of the page?

Download EtreCheck: https://etrecheck.com/maspro  and post the report here.

Click, “Free Download” button and then  “Click to download” button,

open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

Click on the bouncing  EtreCheck icon in the Dock.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar and select “Copy report”.

Click the “Page” button in the toolbar at the bottom of this page and paste it when you reply.

If this doesn't help, please try splitting the report into two parts and make it as two posts.

Hello Eric,

Thanks for your suggestions. I performed them all, unfortunately the problem continues. I had previously uninstalled Trusteer as I found it did cause a lot of issues, I don't know why it showed up in the Etrecheck. So just to be sure, I uninstalled it again, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

I think perhaps the only solution is to uninstall Safari and redownload it.

Signing out and in of iCloud in system preferences didn't make a difference. Finally I got on the phone with Apple tech support and after about 45 minutes (and having the issue escalated) it was resolved. They tried a lot of different things, not sure exactly which one made the difference. But I believe it was something we did in the Library folder (though not the procedure suggested above here).
