I just got an iPhone XR after trading in my iPhone 7. However, I did not realize that my iMessages did not back up automatically and my last iCloud backup was at around 5 pm yesterday. In between the last backup and the time I got my phone, I received and sent some very important messages that are now gone. Is there any way I can recover them?

Long shot, but do you have another device, such as an iPad that has the message content you require, if so you could enable iCloud Messages which if done on the iPad first should then populate everything else with it’s content when similarly enabled.
You should be able to do similar if you have a computer that holds the messages as well.

If you no longer have the old phone, no. The messages are lost forever.
