Show music genre on finder/folder in list view

Hello,

I am looking to see if it's possible to show the music genre of every songs I have in a folder as in list view. I believe it can be done, but can't seem to get it.

In the VLC player, it shows the type of genre it is for a song. But in the folder/finder that I have songs in, it doesn't show the music genre. Please see screenshots as an example when I choose the same song. In the finder, I you can see you can sort it by music genre but it doesn't show the music genre but when I select that song and play in in the VLC player, it shows the music genre.

Since I have hundreds of songs in a folder, I want to be able to see what type of music genre that song is so I can organize all the songs in folders by genre.

How can this be done? Please help.

This same question was asked over four years ago. A few people claimed to have figured out how to add such columns to a Finder window. However, NOBODY ever explained exactly how they accomplished this, assuming that they really did. I am wondering if this is actually just a hoax to dumbfound people. Either that, or maybe adding the additional columns was possible at one time, but at some point Apple removed the feature. The previous discussion can be found here:

OT, I am still completely stumped by how some of you are getting this to work.

I have over 6,000 songs in my iTunes library, and I have specified the genre for every single song in iTunes.

However, I do NOT actually have my music in the official "Music" folder. I have it stored elsewhere on my machine.

In other words, in iTune's prefs, on the "Advanced" tab, I have NOT checked the option which says "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". It has always seemed redundant to me, and a total waste of space, to keep my music stored in two places on my hard drive.

Could this fact possibly have something to do with why so many of us don't see any of the music-related columns in our Finder windows?

When you say "Perhaps you need iTunes to assign the genre to it", exactly what do you mean by "it", and exactly how did you accomplish it?

Thanks. Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Well, I was so curious about how to get this working, that I went ahead and bit the bullet, and I used iTunes' option to copy and consolidate all of my music in /Users/somedude/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music/. Despite doing that, I still do not see any extra columns to add in the window's "Show View Options" dialog.

Very elusive, this thing! :)

Come on, somebody! Tell us how you did it!

Thank you Old Toad. Your old age has obviously provided you with a lot of old wisdom . . . well, at least when it comes to Macs. :)

It took me a bit of time to understand how to set up the preview options that I wanted, but now I am happy to report that each song title in the macOS Finder now shows album art, file name, album name, song name, artist, date, duration, genre, file size and file type.

I'm glad your method worked on all of the subfolders simultaneously. I would have been here forever if I had to do it folder by folder.

You just got yourself 10 points for problem resolved! Yay you!

Oh wait . . . it looks like I can only give you a helpful. Is that because I am not the one who started this thread? I would have given you the ten points. :)
