Mojave Preview app fails to import from scanner

Since updating OS to Mojave, the Preview App can not import from scanner. The OS recognizes the scanner and starts it up without difficulty. It does the overview scan normally. When I try to scan a document in Preview into .PDF format, it does the scan, but then I get an error message that says that the image is in a format that can not be opened by preview, or is damaged. If I try to scan into a different format, such as .TIFF or .JPG, the app crashes.

I am using an iMac late 2013, running Mojave 10.14.3

The scanner is a HP LaserJet M1212nf MFP. It worked just fine with the Preview app under all prior MacOS versions.
