My audio waveform goes blank when scrolling during playback, reappears when pausing.

I'm trying to edit an interview in FCP 10.4.5 and audio waveforms are enabled in the timeline. When the clips are played and the playhead goes beyond what's visible on screen (to the right) and I side-scroll to catch up, the waveforms are gone. Once I pause playback, the waveforms immediately reappear. Is this normal behavior for FCP? Is there a way to keep the waveforms while scrolling?

After hitting pause:

Also, is there a setting to scroll the timeline automatically with the playhead as it's playing back the clip?

I'm on a 2016 MacBook Pro with 16GB of ram and a 1TB internal SSD. Files are stored locally. The audio file is WAV from a Zoom F4 recorder.
