SD-card slot, iMac

Friends,

my sd-card slot suddenly seems to narrow for an sd-card, like it is in a half shut-position. I can force the card in (and out), but something is obviously wrong. And when I've forced it in, it wont read. There is nothing wrong with the card itself (but I'm sure there will be, if I continue to use that much force to push it in). It works just fine on other devices.

My iMac is late 2013. I googled the problem, and found one post in which it was advised to wiggle a toothpick around on the inside of the slot (something about a small switch stuck in there). I tried, but without success.

Anyone? Would be much appreciated.

If the fitment issue exists among multiple SDHC/SDXC cards, then there is likely very little you can re-engineer on your own, or via the poking device de jure from Internet advice.

I recommend that you schedule time with an Apple Store, or Apple Authorized Service Center to have them take a closer look. Some micro-SD to SD card holders can be overly thick for these slots too. Got one of those here.

Thanks, VikingOSX.

Yes, it is not only this one card, it is a general problem (and it started about 6 months ago), just after my Mojave-uptdate (could of course be a coincident, don't know if there's even a theoretical possibility, just sayin). I live very far away from an Apple Store or Service center, and sending it away would be a lot of hassle, and I need the iMac for work. If I can't fix this problem, I'll probably just go around it, by buying an external sd-slot than can be plugged into one of the usb-ports.

But still, there must be some moveable parts in there, controlled by software? I'm pretty confident it is not dust or anything like that. It's like the opening has tightened on the inside, making the whole thing become more narrow, but I don't know. When a card is inserted in a noral functioning sd-slot, also in mine before the problem occured, it is not like you insert the card, and it locks in. So: there is no lock to get stuck in a locked position, even if that is what it feels like (making it all seem more mysterious)

Pretty sure nothing is stuck in there, even if that now seems like the most natural explanation. There's a 3 year old around, but even the front of the iMac is way out of his reach, that's for sure. I've only used one card, and not every month, and nothing is missing from it, totally intact. The back of the computer is a «protected area», not exposed to debris, dust, scraps or anything that would make me suspect anything could have got in there. The strange thing is the evenness of the obstruction. It is equally hard to insert the card almost from start to finish, but it can be done (just, and I would think with a danger of damaging the card), like the vertical space inside shrank. I'll try to poke around in there once more. Thanks for all advice
