If Waze for example is giving me guidance to a location and I want to quit Waze, how can I do it from the CarPlay screen? So far the only way I’ve found to quit an app in CarPlay is to dig out my phone and quit the app there.

Unless they are actively doing something, like navigation or media playback, apps don't actually run in the background. If you terminate navigation in Waze, then go to the home screen, Waze will not be doing anything in the background. It's not necessary to terminate apps at all unless they are causing a problem. There is no way to terminate apps in the CarPlay interface like there is directly in the interface on the phone.

If you want Waze to stop giving you navigation prompts, then cancel the route you initiated in Waze...

I'm not so sure about your vehicle, since you do not indicate anything, but in my Hyundai Elantra, on the CarPlay screen, there is a home button I can tap on to serve the same function as the home button on an iPhone. That should close the app.
Thanks. I have the home button as well, but it only switches between apps. So in the case of Waze, even after I switch to Apple Music on the main screen, Waze continues to give me navigation prompts. Just wondering if there is a way to quit the app without using my phone.
