mojave no longer recognises exteral har drive on router

Imac, late 2015, running Mojave version 10.14. 3

Router; Asus AC 1900.

Router connected to mac via Ethernet, to all other devices in network via wifi.

Have a 2TB external hard drive attached to the router. This has meant I can access the drive on all of my devices. I recently disconnected it incorrectly. The result is the Mac now cannot find the drive. No problems with any of the other devices.

I have rebooted both the Mac and router a couple of times. I've obviously done something stupid. I'm hoping the solution is not too onerous.

I want the external drive accessible by the Mac so I can add files directly. I can possibly do that via my Windows laptop, but it's a lot of messing round.

You mentioned that you have rebooted both your Mac and your router a couple of times. However, did you actually cold start your Mac -- meaning completely shutting it down, waiting about 15 seconds, and then hitting the power button -- or did you just restart it?

Sometimes networks can get confused and their messages crossed. What I suggest you do is shut down everything on your network -- all modems, routers, Macs and external backup drives. You may even want to unplug your Mac again as well. Wait a few minutes, and then plug in your cable modem first, assuming that is what you are using. Wait a few minutes until all of the modem lights are displaying properly, and then plug in your router next, following by plugging in your Mac and other devices. Hopefully, that will return everything to a clean virgin state, insofar as connections are concerned.

Also, if you use any kind of a USB hub, make sure that it is turned back on. Some just use the electrical plug, while others have a switch on them.

Last of all, check your settings on the "General" tab in the Finder preferences. Make sure you have the proper items enabled.

Please let me know if this is helpful and/or resolves your issue. Thanks!
