I have Iphone xs max. Every so often when I go to tap the screen to use it it stays black and I have to hold down the power button and volume button to wake it up. Never had that issue with any previous iphone. Any ideas?

If you can replicate the issue (make it happen), I would recommend taking the phone into an Apple Store to get it checked out. You can create an appointment here:

If you scroll all the way down, you will see a blue button saying 'Get hardware help'. Click on that and it will guide you to making an appointment.
If you can't replicate it, I would recommend talking to someone at Apple, or maybe even resetting of the phone (you would lose all data though):

I guess your phone is still in warranty period? Then take it to your local Apple Store and get it looked at.
