How do I keep my photos in iCloud but delete them from my laptop to free up storage?

Des22, you wouldn’t be the first to mistakenly think your saving to iCloud and then deleting from your device leaves them in iCloud but in 30 days time they are purged from iCloud storage
iCloud is a syncing system, not an external storage system.
Thanks for your message. That seems odd. If I put files into Dropbox I can delete them from my device, creating more storage on the device. I would be surprised if iCloud did not offer this capability. I could put all my photos on Dropbox, but iCloud photo seems to keep them arranged in the folders I've already created.
You can’t not delete them from your Mac if that is the onl6 place they are, think of the iCloud as a mirror of your device, it reflects what is present on your Mac .
