My MacBook Pro May Have A Virus - What do I do?

Hello,

I think I may have a virus on my Mac. This is embarrassingly my own fault. I opened an email and an attachment I should not have opened.

Now, everything is achingly slow and I can't attach things to any email. My MacBook Pro has all my financial stuff that I cannot afford to lose. I am afraid to back it up with the risk of just putting the virus on my hard drive. I do not know what to do. Can you help?
