Trouble networking two imacs

We are having trouble networking two iMacs over our wireless network. We can see one iMac (2017) from the other (late 2012) and search files on it, but cannot see or link from the 2017 iMac to the other 2012 iMac. Both are running Mojave 10.14.3. Any thoughts why this might be?

Connecting 2 iMacs over a wifi network I am trying to connect two iMacs that are sitting next to each other via wifi so I can transfer files back and forth. They are on the same wifi but have different operating systems. One has Cataelina and one has High Sierra. They do not "see" each other at all. I have even tried to connect by "connect to server" and using the smb address. The computer that has High Sierra can see another iMac in the house but not the one sitting right next to it. The one with Catelina cannot see the third iMac. I am completely baffled (note I have a very very rudimentary knowledge of networking). Help? Please. Transferring files back and forth via USB drive is a pain in the rear.

Connecting two iMacs with an Ethernet Cable I need to connect two iMacs with an ethernet cable. I have successfully done this on my network through WiFi, so the permissions are all ok. But I need faster file transfer speeds. I followed the instructions on how to do this, and it seems that I simply connect the two ethernet ports with a standard Ethernet cable (not a crossover cable). The problem: having done this, neither computer displays the other in the Finder Window or in the GO > CONNECT TO SERVER > BROWSE. What could be wrong? (I make sure this is the preferred connection by turning OFF the WiFi for each computer). Thank you.

Open System Preferences on the older Mac. Select Sharing. Make sure that File Sharing is turned on. See this Apple article for more information: Set up file sharing on Mac - Apple Support
