BootCamp issue: "The startup disk does not have enough space to be partitioned."

I have the issue above while trying to install Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013). There was a previous post on the same issue but it ended with no solution. Did anyone got it to work? Any assistance is much appreciated. Thanks.

Your bootable USB drive could not be created

There is not enough space available on the disk.

This is using a 32 GB USB3 Flash Drive with a Late 2012 iMac 21.5" using Mojave. I'm trying to recreate a Windows partition that was lost.

I browsed over the internet for solutions on the same issue - there were lots. The url below points to one of the solutions that is claimed by many people to be working. Sadly, I tried it many times but to no avail.

Local Snapshots is just one issue, there are many others.

Nonetheless, after trying so many different things and rebooting the Mac many times, I found out that when Boot Camp is started, it will initially report "The startup disk does not have enough space to be partitioned". If I click OK and then try again, it will go through!

I am trying to install Windows 10 by following the instructions at this url "Install Windows on your older Mac using Boot Camp" https://support.apple.com/en-my/guide/bootcamp-assistant/bcmp09f5f773/mac
The Windows 10 ISO file is downloaded from Microsoft site (Win10_18090Oct_English_x64.iso) and I placed it in my iCloud Drive.

Use W10 1803 (April) instead of 1809 (October). There are known issues with 1809 bundle, which is addressed in some specific cases, but not all.

The instruction provided by the Mac support group is to have "A blank 16 GB or larger external USB 2 flash drive, formatted as MS-DOS (FAT)." Instead, I plugged in a 32 GB external USB 3 flash drive.

Do not use a USB3. You need to use a USB2 Flash drive of 8+GB. 16GB is safe, if you do not use W10 1809.

So, everything is set and I started the installation.

I followed the instructions provided by Mac Support closely. At "Step 3: Prepare your Mac for Windows", instruction "At the Select Tasks step, select all the tasks, then click Continue." Boot Camp does not allow me to tick on the third item "Install or remove Windows 10 or later version". I do not know what this mean - it seemed that Boot Camp does not allow me to Install Windows 10??

Nonetheless, I continued with the installation.

  • Boot Camp erased and format my flash drive
  • and then "Copying Windows files..."
  • (I have no idea where the Windows files are copied into. I assumed Boot Camp is copying Windows into the flash drive.)
  • True enough, Boot Camp was copying the Windows file onto the flash drive. Obviously, 32 GB is not enough.
  • I have to abandoned the installation
  • I think I need to have a larger flash drive; may be 128 GB. But, before I move onto this path and spend more money, I really need to know where does this ends eventually. It seems that the issues facing the Boot Camp installation of the Windows 10 on an older version of Mac Pro is endless .... I wonder what other issues will I face if I make use of 128 GB flash drive?

If there is anyone out there that has gone through the same issues that I faced, I would love to know if you resolved the Boot Camp issues and manage to have a working Windows 10 installation. I have spent many days doing this and would like to know if it's worth more of my time to pursue this.

Thanks in advance.
