It is a very simple process, my friend.
NOTE #1: You can also do a "Get Info" by hovering over a file or folder and right-clicking it to reveal a contextual menu. Just select the "Get Info" option in the menu.
NOTE#2: You can also use a large image by opening it, doing a select all -- command-a -- and then copying it -- command-c.
I hope the above was easy to understand. It should work.

command i opens the info pane on the folder.
highlite the icon upper left— open you r new image, command a (select all) then copy and paste your image.
square images work best—seems to change from OS to OS. 256 x 256, 512 x 512 or common sizes, you can try any
size of course.

You can use the delete key to reverse any previous custom image, png, jpg etc. then paste your selected image.

the svg extensions is for a scalable vector graphic and is not compatible with icon replacement. As you've already been directed convert it to a jpeg or png file and then apply. And be aware that square images work best for folder icons.
Hello, my friend. Wow . . . I was not aware of that. SVG files can be troublesome, apparently. I encountered the same thing as you. Doing a simple copy and paste in the "Get Info" window did NOT work. Even opening an SVG in Adobe Photoshop, selecting all, and then copying, did NOT work. Dropping an SVG on the "Get Info" window also did NOT work. The only thing that DID work, was when I converted the SVG to a JPG. Then it DID work. I could open both "Get Info" windows, and copy and paste, as I described in my previous message. What a hassle! :(
Leroy, I think you -- and a few others here -- are missing an important point which Mtfotonut and I discussed earlier in this thread. That is the fact that command-c and command-v apparently do NOT work with SVG files. As I said earlier:

So to reiterate, it appears that SVGs need to be converted to another format -- such as PNG or JPG -- before command-c and command-v will work with them in the "Get Info" window. If anyone commenting here has experienced otherwise, it would be interesting to know, along with exactly how you accomplished it.
well I have NO idea why any above the above won't solve my problem..i̵s̵ ̵i̵t̵ ̵d̵u̵e̵ ̵t̵o̵ ̵O̵S̵ ̵M̵o̵j̵a̵v̵e̵?̵ ̵ or what? errr
Is this a folder that you created?
From Finder>File>New Folder and test
does it make a difference type of file? the icon I want to use is "svg" using this method is doesn't work..errrr. I always has in the past, new iMac, new OS Mojave
Thanks
I followed the usual way, but the icon, when I click "I" shows in the bottom part of info but in upper left corner stays a weird download icon, see pic. Just weird
None of the above is working..does it matter that the info page is opening in Preview? or what should it be opening in?

Are you saying that even when you convert the SVGs to PNGs or JPGs, you still cannot copy and paste them in the "Get Info" window?
Hi there!
All you need to do is select the folder, then press CMD + I. A popup should then appear. Find the picture you want, and drag it onto the little folder icon in the top left corner of the aforementioned popup.
Hope I helped!
The "info pane" will open with command i. Preview has nothing to do with it.
The folder can be anywhere on your Mac.
Highlight your folder, don't open the folder, command i, once the info pane is open highlight the little folder icon in the upper left—
Have you got that far?
how do I change my folder to my icon
