What is error code -9923?

I'm getting this error code today when I try to use my Epson scanner (which I used yesterday without a problem.) Image Capture displays the message "An error occurred while communicating with the scanner. (-9923)" I checked the System Report and the scanner is listed on the USB bus, but neither Image Capture nor VueScan see it.

I just cleaned the glass on the scanner with a slightly damp cloth, but I don't think any moisture could have got inside.

I have restarted the Mac with no result.

iMac 21.5", macOS 10.14

For some reason Mac based computers currently have an issue wirelessly scanning if a printer has IPv6 enabled.

Thinking maybe scanning is done by Wifi?

You can try resetting the SMC.

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately, I don't think this applies. It's an older scanner - an Epson Perfection 2400, which isn't wireless capable, and is connected by USB.
