So I’ve just got the iPhone XR and I when I press and hold a new WhatsApp message it doesn’t allow me to “peak” at it without opening it. My sister has the iPhone X and it works so why wouldn’t mine?

Hi JennaMalcolm! Unfortunately, the "peek and pop" feature you're referring to requires 3D Touch, which your XR does not have. Your sisters iPhone X does have this feature. You could have a look at this article which explains this, and about the Haptic Touch feature your XR has:
