Recovery key

I have a 1st gen ipad that I just recharged. I'm trying to login with my apple id on it, and it's asking me for a recovery key. I don't recall ever getting one of these to begin with. I can successfully login with my apple id to my other devices, but there's no where in the security settings where I can reset my recovery key.

Does this mean that I cannot login with my apple id to my old 1st gen ipad anymore? This seems like a poor design on behalf of apple if we can't use our apple id's on older devices any more. I have searched this forum, and the only links were to a page with instructions on resetting the recovery key, which included options in the security section that are no longer available. Please let me know what other methods I can use to access this so that I can log into my 1st gen ipad using my apple id. Thank you.

I went ahead and deleted my iCloud id from my old ipad, and then re-entered it again as a new id. This ended up working, I had to get an authentication code from one of my other devices and include it in the password as instructed, and was then able to log on with my apple id.
