My iMovie projects still exist in a folder on my computer (in an unreadable format) but have disappeared from the iMovie app after updating.

The iMovie app on my Macbook had stopped working (did not even open) so I had to update it to the newest version.

The projects I had still exist under Movies>iMovie Projects

but they are not in a format that I can use.

The updated app does not have any of the old projects on it and I am unable to open them.

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.14

In your Movies folder on your Mac there should be two iMovie 9 folders: iMovie Projects and iMovie Events. The contents of those two folders is what iMovie 10 updates when you select to "update projects and events". Both are updated, not just one, so they must be kept together. If you have moved the two folders to an external drive they must be stored at the root level of the drive (i.e, not in any other folder) or iMovie 10 will not be able to find them.

Also, open each of the two folders and check to see if there is a marker listed in them titled "UpdatedToiMovie10". If so, delete that file in each of the folders and try again to update projects and events.

At this point your thought of reverting to a backup is good. Try that and see if the backup has your projects. The backup you are looking for would be the Projects folder and Events folder located in the Movies folder.

I can't think of anything else to try. If nothing works, you might check in with the Genius Bar at a local Apple store to see if they can help.

Hmmmm. Updating iMovie 9 projects and events to iMovie 10 would not cause the files to disappear. The projects and events would continue to exist in iMovie 9, as well as in iMovie 10.

Since the update markers were there, is it possible that you had already updated the projects and events into a different iMovie 10 library?

Hi,

It appears that you had iMovie 9 on your computer. That version no longer works on Mojave, as you have found. If that's the case, after updating to iMovie 10 open iMovie 10 and do a File/Update Projects and Events. That will update your iMovie 9 projects and events into iMovie 10 where they can be edited.

Here's a link that describes the process:
