Mojave 10.14.4 fails to Authenticate Gmail account

Just update to Mojave 10.14.4 and now Apple Mail will NOT connect to one of my Gmail accounts.

This issue is UNIQUE to Apple Mail as I can access the Gmail account using Spark on the same computer without issues.

This issue is UNIQUE to Mojave 10.14.4 as it did not exist with 10.14.3 and it does not exist on another computer running an earlier version of Mac OS X.

The issue puts me in an endless loop. I get a notification "Google requires completing authentication in Safari." This takes me to a Sign in dialog where I enter email account and password. Password is correct and accepted, after which I'm back in the loop again asking to enter Google Password.

If I login to my Google account in Safari I can see the recent events that I signed in without any problems on this Mac, but Apple Mail does NOT connect and I am back in the endless loop.

Oddly I can add events to the Google Calendar for the account so apparently something is amiss strictly with Apple Mail.

Suggestions?

Thanks to mulberrywriter for the answer .

Most easiest way without downloading and deleting accounts.

  1. Go to your gmail account in browser.
  2. There is a little gear in your gmail under all emails (I did this way so explain step by step from my side)
  3. Choose Settings under that gear
  4. Choose Account and Imports
  5. Choose Other Google Account settings
  6. Choose Review your privacy settings.
  7. Choose device information. If it is Turned off - you need t click on it and turn it ON. If it is ON, You can turn it off and again turn it on.
  8. Do not logout. Go to Mail and Click on Lighting icon near your account.
  9. Click everything it will ask.
  10. In browser you will see an option to "Allow". Click it and DONE. It will finish authentication smoothly.

Process takes 2 minutes. All calendar info and emails will stay with no issues. I hope it will works fine after as well.

I have the exact same issue described by everyone here: two gmail accounts, regular gmail has authenticated fine, Gsuite not, staying on an infinite loop since updating to 10.14.4. I have solved this by creating app specific password in the web settings of my google account. I know this is not ideal. because you get access only to mail and notes, but it is a temporary workaround. For me it work fine.

I find that macendo's "sideways lightning strike" regularly reappears, for no obvious reason other than, perhaps, the passage of time. Clicking it then gets the account back online without having to re-enter any passwords.

But why am I having to do this ?

It is really annoying as I can no longer rely on Apple Mail to just fetch my mail. Well done, Apple.

Update: I read in the earlier comments that this issue was flagged up during beta testing. Releasing Mail in this state is disgraceful.

I posted yesterday but thought I'd provide an update. I'm a bit frustrated with the support I've received from Apple about this issue.

Yesterday I talked to a technician for literally two hours. I thought he was good. I pointed him to this discussion thread and he read a lot of it. We tried all sorts of solutions, none of which worked. He then had me download an app for capturing data and I emailed the resulting file and a screenshot to Apple. The technician seemed caring and also seemed to understand the problem. We made an appointment for him to call me tonight.

However, tonight I got a call from a different technician. He told me that the previous technician was somehow no longer available. The new technician claimed he was an expert on this Mail issue, but he actually was clueless. I had to explain to him what was going on. I now felt like the two hours I'd spent with the technician yesterday were a waste of time. The new technician didn't mention the data capture or the screenshot or any of the notes the previous technician had made. I also don’t think he had looked at this discussion thread.

I shared my screen with the new technician and I showed him the authentication loop. He then determined that the best solution was for me to delete my Gmail account from Mail and then re-add it. However, I have lots of email folders under "On My Mac" in Mail with lots of saved emails (which aren’t on the Gmail server) and I worried that they might disappear as well. He seemed to think they would disappear. I'm not so sure they would, but I didn't want to delete the account in case they did.

The technician said if I did delete the account and the folders disappeared, I could restore the folders via Time Machine.  But it felt like a messy solution to me, so I decided not to do it.

He then said he would escalate my case to a higher-level technician. So I’m now waiting for another call.

I don't think any call to technicians will fix things. Nothing will fix the bug until Apple roll out an update to Mojave but there is a workaround.

There is no need to delete accounts. Just turn them off, make them inactive so you don't lose your On My Mac emails.

Then add your Google accounts using manual IMAP settings. You must also use app specific password server side on Google.

Your emails will now work whilst Apple issue a fix.

This level of unpolished, out-and-out unprofessionalism from Apple is the reason I will not be buying from them again.

Apple used to be pretty much flawless. In 2019 we get laptops whose keyboards don't work and macOS updates that stop you accessing email - all the time while Apple gleefully chases the North American media market like the rest of the world in an afterthought.

No more.

I made the mistake of changing my gmail passwords on two accounts now the iPhone and iPad mail apps won't work and won't let me update the passwords on the device. I tried to delete the accounts in the iOS settings but now I can't add them back in. AFter I select Google and enter the required information it takes me back to the screen where you select which service you are using and nothing has been added. It was working until I made a change, but this issue will soon be popping up when people are trying to add a new gmail account to an iOS device.

Same problem. Changed gmail password and then gmail would not work on iPad and iPhone. Tried deleting the gmail account and could not get it back. What worked for me was selecting add an Exchange account instead of a Google account. Select the configure manually option when it appears, and then enter all of your google login info. Use the server m.google.com. It works well except email does not delete but archives instead. And you have to go into settings then passwords & accounts then tap Mail Days to Sync and select unlimited. Hope this helps. What a pain!

In addition to having this problem with one of my Google accounts (a G-Suite account) and not with two Gmail accounts nor a second G-Suite account, I'm now having the same issue with iOS 12.2 on both iPhone and iPad. All of a sudden this afternoon, neither is able to authenticate this one Google account.

All attempts to re-enter the password in Settings loop back to a prompt to re-enter the password in Settings, even though the authentication succeeds according to Google (as I get a security notice by email).

I'll be reporting this through Apple Feedback as well.

Same problem here, and now it's also happening on my iPhone. It's happening with all our Gsuite accounts. It's a big issue since they are business accounts, today we lost an important customer because we didn't reply to his email on time. Not good Apple, you need to fix it TODAY.

Remember what Steve Jobs said: "Nike makes some of the best products in the world. Products that you lust after. But you also make a lot of crap. Just get rid of the crappy stuff and focus on the good stuff.” Stop trying to get into everything (Hollywood, music, video game industry" and focus on what you are supposed to be good at!!! (or at least you were a few years ago!!)
