Mojave 10.14.4 fails to Authenticate Gmail account

Just update to Mojave 10.14.4 and now Apple Mail will NOT connect to one of my Gmail accounts.

This issue is UNIQUE to Apple Mail as I can access the Gmail account using Spark on the same computer without issues.

This issue is UNIQUE to Mojave 10.14.4 as it did not exist with 10.14.3 and it does not exist on another computer running an earlier version of Mac OS X.

The issue puts me in an endless loop. I get a notification "Google requires completing authentication in Safari." This takes me to a Sign in dialog where I enter email account and password. Password is correct and accepted, after which I'm back in the loop again asking to enter Google Password.

If I login to my Google account in Safari I can see the recent events that I signed in without any problems on this Mac, but Apple Mail does NOT connect and I am back in the endless loop.

Oddly I can add events to the Google Calendar for the account so apparently something is amiss strictly with Apple Mail.

Suggestions?

Thanks to mulberrywriter for the answer .

Most easiest way without downloading and deleting accounts.

  1. Go to your gmail account in browser.
  2. There is a little gear in your gmail under all emails (I did this way so explain step by step from my side)
  3. Choose Settings under that gear
  4. Choose Account and Imports
  5. Choose Other Google Account settings
  6. Choose Review your privacy settings.
  7. Choose device information. If it is Turned off - you need t click on it and turn it ON. If it is ON, You can turn it off and again turn it on.
  8. Do not logout. Go to Mail and Click on Lighting icon near your account.
  9. Click everything it will ask.
  10. In browser you will see an option to "Allow". Click it and DONE. It will finish authentication smoothly.

Process takes 2 minutes. All calendar info and emails will stay with no issues. I hope it will works fine after as well.

It seems Google resolved the issue on their end!-

Just tried reconnecting in Mail (by clicking the lightning bolt button) and after two authentication tries (the first failed to complete even though I entered the correct password - perhaps a sign Google changed and was resetting something on their end - the second succeeded) Mail finally connected to my mailbox to perform its first sync up in 3 days.

PS. I did not delete/re-setup nor try any of the 'Charles' or certificate fixes during the wait. Idea of having to resync my entire mailbox then having Time Machine re-backup and Spotlight re-index them just wasn't fun. Patience paid off fortunately...

Yes it does work now. The "Charles Proxy" solution worked flawlessly and soon after quickly things seemed to be resolved. I was thrilled to go through that setup successfully because it's good education. Everyone needs education right? (thanks to the original poster). I paid for a Charles license because it's a very cool application. It will come in handy in the future.

I was also in an endless loop for authenticating old G Suite account.

Well, after reading latest posts I just tried again to add the account (I removed when it stop working) and all the process was as usual without errors.

I didid not erased any old info on keychain... Basically I just tried again the normal process for add a google account !

Thanks for all the contributors in this forum !

Well, I woke up to 100s of posts on this question and the most recent ones suggest that Apple fixed the issue. Without having to delete and re-establish my Google account, I clicked through the authethication process and IT WORKS!

I guess Apple does read this. Now I just have to figure out how to stop more messages on this thread from appearing in my mailbox! LOL

I am having the same issue with my MacMini 10.14.4 and Apple Mail, but I believe it is more Google than Apple. The same loop issue started 2 weeks ago on my wife's MacBook Pro 10.14.3, but using Outlook. I had to move her to Apple Mail so she can work. Of course, having said all of that, her MacBook Pro 10.14.3 with Apple Mail is still working fine. This issue is frustrating to say the least.

At least Kiwi is still working so I can get my emails.

As a couple others have mentioned, last night I went through the authentication process again for my GSuite account, and it all worked. I had made no changes to the account before or after the 10.14.4 upgrade, so based on everything that's been posted here sounds like Google had to make a change on their side to resolve this.

People are reporting that Google must've done something to resolve the G-Suite Gmail authentication issue. It's more likely that Apple fixed this because the problem clearly was caused in Mojave 10.14.4, so the bug was most likely introduced by Apple, not Google.

Really? When did Apple release a patch for you to apply? What version of Mail is now current? When did Software Update advise you of a new download to fix this. No, it’s more highly probable that the Mojave 10.14.4 update enabled a bug in Google’s servers.
