Mojave 10.14.4 fails to Authenticate Gmail account

Just update to Mojave 10.14.4 and now Apple Mail will NOT connect to one of my Gmail accounts.

This issue is UNIQUE to Apple Mail as I can access the Gmail account using Spark on the same computer without issues.

This issue is UNIQUE to Mojave 10.14.4 as it did not exist with 10.14.3 and it does not exist on another computer running an earlier version of Mac OS X.

The issue puts me in an endless loop. I get a notification "Google requires completing authentication in Safari." This takes me to a Sign in dialog where I enter email account and password. Password is correct and accepted, after which I'm back in the loop again asking to enter Google Password.

If I login to my Google account in Safari I can see the recent events that I signed in without any problems on this Mac, but Apple Mail does NOT connect and I am back in the endless loop.

Oddly I can add events to the Google Calendar for the account so apparently something is amiss strictly with Apple Mail.

Suggestions?

Thanks to mulberrywriter for the answer .

Most easiest way without downloading and deleting accounts.

  1. Go to your gmail account in browser.
  2. There is a little gear in your gmail under all emails (I did this way so explain step by step from my side)
  3. Choose Settings under that gear
  4. Choose Account and Imports
  5. Choose Other Google Account settings
  6. Choose Review your privacy settings.
  7. Choose device information. If it is Turned off - you need t click on it and turn it ON. If it is ON, You can turn it off and again turn it on.
  8. Do not logout. Go to Mail and Click on Lighting icon near your account.
  9. Click everything it will ask.
  10. In browser you will see an option to "Allow". Click it and DONE. It will finish authentication smoothly.

Process takes 2 minutes. All calendar info and emails will stay with no issues. I hope it will works fine after as well.

I've been dealing with this same issue for two days now getting the run around from apple and gmail.

So this is a hack solution to access you emails on macmail in the interim:

Get another email address that is not gmail

Add it to your macmail

Then login to gmail via internet

Forward all your gmails to your other email.

I don't know why this works but on my macmail the gmail account was offline and when I forwarded emails from gmail to another account in my macmail it suddenly went online.

Anyway I hope this helps temporarily solve the problem whilst apple and google battle it out !

I have had this same problem for one week. Deleted my Gmail account thinking this would help. Now I cant add it back. I am stuck in the loop.

I've been on the phone with Apple for two days for a total of 6-8 hours. After screen sharing and shooting and forwarding info to "engineers" no one can help. Luckily, my mobile devices still work but this is very bad. I have a business to run!

When I tried one of the workarounds, I got this from Google:

Someone just used your password to try to sign in to your account from a non-Google app. Google blocked them, but you should check what happened.

So this is Google blocking on their end - at least it's part of the problem. They don't ask if you want them to block it or allow the other app access. They just block it. They won't do it for iPhones cause they know all **** would break loose, but for Macs, they're continually trying to trip up Apple and make life difficult for them. My yahoo account is working fine with my Mac email...

I have been following this thread for a while since I am having the same issues with all my gmail accounts (I have several). It does seem that the problem may be emanating from Google. I hope that Apple can resolve this as it is a serious barrier for all Apple Mail users with gmail accounts. In the meantime, I have switched to Thunderbird for my emails and all is working fine. Will be glad to revert to Apple Mail when this is resolved.

Nearly a month now. The unlock chapta in the post above didn't work for me. When I try to take my gmail account on-line by entering my password on safari as instructed my version of the problem includes getting a banner error message in a box with a big red !, Heading"Email Address Mismatch". Text "The email address you entered does not match your account". And I am then invited to go round the loop again (same error message again) and I get yet another email message saying macOS has access to my account. Not sure everyone is seeing the same error message as I am.

This is a common problem now, but one person's solution doesn't seem to fix everybody's problem.

I would suggest closing the gmail accounts on your Apple Mail (system preferences - internet accounts - deleting the gmail accounts by clicking the - sign.).

Then close the gmail accounts on Google on your browser. (if you reopen the accounts later, the data will still be there)

Then reboot your Mac, and reopen the gmail accounts on their web site.

Then set up the gmail accounts on your Mail again, by going to System preferences - internet accounts and instead of pressing the + sign or the Gmail link, press 'Add Another Account (do not use the Google link)'. Then press 'Mail Account" and enter your data.

Let me know if this works for those of you with problems. Mine was fixed by resetting up the gmail accounts as in one of the previous paragraph. I think the problem is with the Google link.

Cheers

This is so strange that for some the update fixes the issue and other not. I just upgraded several hours ago, and for me, the issue appears to be fixed. To be clear, I was always able to access my gmail accounts after doing some of the fixes (removing all my accounts, re-starting, etc). My issue was at some point they would go to "sleep", i.e. the squiggle would appear on all three. My fix was to quit Mail, then re-launch. It was a temporary fix since eventually it would go offline again. But now, with 10.14.5, they no longer go offline.

The 10.14.5 was not a fix for me. Still having the same identical problem. Looks like another two hour phone call to apple.

Why aren't you making two hour calls to Google then? It’s perfectly clear now that this is a Google issue. If your previous two hour call to Apple didn’t resolve anything what makes you think another two hour call will. With the release of Mojave 10.14.5 it’s clear Apple doesn’t think it has a problem. Google plays by its own rules when it comes to email and services. Why isn’t everybody experiencing this if it’s an Apple bug? I’m certainly not. Funny that it’s only Gmail that hiccups now and no other email service is having issues with Mojave.

I don't think it's a Google bug. There are reports on other threads that other smtp emails weren't working either. I have another mac that did NOT upgrade to Mojave and the google emails worked fine there. This is definitely an OSX issue. My other mac on Mojave stopped working properly with the 10.14.4 upgrade. I did many of the steps suggested here, and while I was able to get email, when not used for awhile, the mailboxes would show the squiggly line and not retrieve emails. I would have to quit Mail and re-open, then they would work. I did the upgrade and it's fine now.

Look.. i've been able to get it to work 2 different ways. 1. Create a new user on your mac and set it up. Worked the first time. Then migrate your user data over to the new user. Worked. 2. log out of gmails website in safari... delete all saved passwords in Safari prefs. delete all accounts in system prefs. remove all folders/files from ~Library/Mail. Destroy any keychain entries for gmail or google. download Onyx and run. Then reboot and setup as new account. Worked.

I don't have the 10.4.5 update. it worked in 10.4.4

May 18, 2019 8:57 AM in response to Ken Graham

10.14.5 didn't fix my problem however, MacSavvyFlorida's 14 May post did. I followed his/her number one suggestion and established a new gmail account in Mac Mail that essentially took over my email service. I left the old account as is, with the little squiggly symbols. I have given my Mac Mail four days to work as advertised or play loop-di-loop. Today, the fourth day, all appears to be working like old times. I have sent myself a few test shots and they all worked as they should have. The account removal procedure offers the possibility to deactivate an account or delete it. I deactivated and all traces of the old account in Mac Mail are gone. In my System Preferences, Accounts, it continues to appear, deactivated. My thought is that if Apple comes up with the fix that is long overdue, I can always reactivate if necessary.

After battling this issue for two weeks I finally spoke with a Sr. Apple advisor that could help. I have the most current OS 10.14.5. This is what we did:

Open spotlight; go to keychain application; bottom left hand side, make sure that "All items" is highlighted. In upper right hand corner "search" for any Google/Gmail related logs linked to your mail account ie: "youraccount@gmail.com". Highlight all the items related to your search and delete them. Restart Mac and retry account again. It worked for me.

Mind you, I have spent hours on the phone with other techs and this took less than 10 minutes including restart time. All has been working perfectly since.

I hope this helps. Have a great day!

This took us a total of 10 minutes including restart time.
