Mojave 10.14.4 fails to Authenticate Gmail account

Just update to Mojave 10.14.4 and now Apple Mail will NOT connect to one of my Gmail accounts.

This issue is UNIQUE to Apple Mail as I can access the Gmail account using Spark on the same computer without issues.

This issue is UNIQUE to Mojave 10.14.4 as it did not exist with 10.14.3 and it does not exist on another computer running an earlier version of Mac OS X.

The issue puts me in an endless loop. I get a notification "Google requires completing authentication in Safari." This takes me to a Sign in dialog where I enter email account and password. Password is correct and accepted, after which I'm back in the loop again asking to enter Google Password.

If I login to my Google account in Safari I can see the recent events that I signed in without any problems on this Mac, but Apple Mail does NOT connect and I am back in the endless loop.

Oddly I can add events to the Google Calendar for the account so apparently something is amiss strictly with Apple Mail.

Suggestions?

Thanks to mulberrywriter for the answer .

Most easiest way without downloading and deleting accounts.

  1. Go to your gmail account in browser.
  2. There is a little gear in your gmail under all emails (I did this way so explain step by step from my side)
  3. Choose Settings under that gear
  4. Choose Account and Imports
  5. Choose Other Google Account settings
  6. Choose Review your privacy settings.
  7. Choose device information. If it is Turned off - you need t click on it and turn it ON. If it is ON, You can turn it off and again turn it on.
  8. Do not logout. Go to Mail and Click on Lighting icon near your account.
  9. Click everything it will ask.
  10. In browser you will see an option to "Allow". Click it and DONE. It will finish authentication smoothly.

Process takes 2 minutes. All calendar info and emails will stay with no issues. I hope it will works fine after as well.

I do NOT want to allow this with my Gmail account: "This will allow macOS to

  • Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail

See, edit, download, and permanently delete your contacts

See, edit, share, and permanently delete all the calendars you can access using Google Calendar. View and send chat messages" How do I get past this requirement????

This worked for me on 8 different Gmail accounts. The glitch happened last night 26Dec19 when I installed a Mojave upgrade.

Note: I am running Mojave 10.14.6, Safari 12.1.2, and Mail 12.4 which may be why it was this simple.

  1. In "Mail," click on the tilde next to the account now connecting. It will pop up a box saying, "Enter the password for the account “**************@gmail.com”. Click on "Open Safari"
  2. Now you see "Sign in to continue to Mac OS." Don't - It's a loop. Instead click on "Create Account" at the bottom.
  3. Don't create a new account. Look below (lower left) and click on "Sign in Instead." It will reopen a log-in box for your Google account.

4. Log in to Google with your email and password (two pop up boxes in a row).

5. It will pop up Google’s "Protect your account." Click on "Confirm"

6. New pop up window, "macOS wants to access your Google Account." Click on "Allow."

Your “Mail” screen will pop to the front and the tilde will be gone. Your mail will now function. Do a test and it should come through.

For those using the same specs as my Mac, hope this works for you also. Since I had 8 accounts to fix, it seems true (but it was one laptop with particular specs). I actually stumbled upon trying this before any solution offered - God's grace maybe. If it works for you, send Him a "thanks."

Merry Christmas!

I think this is something to do with cacheing credentials. I have the same problem as above however I deleted both my G-suite and gmail accounts. I then added my gmail account ( XXX@gmail.com ) under "Internet accounts" and that worked fine. When I try to then add my G-Suite account ( steve@someotherdomain ) it takes me to the safari page, I log in as steve@someotherdomain which seems to go fine but it then drops me back to the "Internet Accounts" window with a popup saying that the account XXX@gmail.com already exists.

So it seems to be that it cannot handle two google accounts being added.

After nearly 1.5 hrs with a senior technician on the phone, we did find some kind of workaround.

I've added it as a Google account in Mail, but for some reason it comes up as a normal mail account, which is strange. He emptied a couple of Library folders, caches etc but we found out that if 'Less secure app access' is turned off in the Google account security settings, it won't work, only if it is 'on'.

At least the G Suite account is now up and running again, but doesn't merge with 'All Mail' with the normal non G Suite gmail account.

I am also having this problem.

I have two Gmail accounts (let's call them A and B). I also have two macs (let's call them 1 and 2).

I updated Mac 1 and 2 to 10.14.4 at the same yesterday.

After the update, on both Macs my Gmail accounts had disappeared entirely from the Internet Accounts System Preferences pane. I re-added them.

On Mac 1, I was able to successfully re-add BOTH accounts. Both worked perfectly.

On Mac 2, I was only able to re-add account B. Account A got stuck in this endless of authentication failures with the "(null)" error.

It's worth noting at this point that account B is a regular @gmail.com account, whereas account A uses a custom domain to login to Google.

I spoke at length to Apple customer services who assured me that their engineers are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. Why this slipped through the net even though it was apparently an issue ion the pre-release Beta is beyond me!

They advised me the problem was more common with accounts from GSuite/Google for Business, or accounts with custom domains.

They also suggested I try something which apparently has worked for some people: delete all Google accounts from System preferences. Then remove all references to Gmail and Google from Keychain. Then restart. Then re-add them to Internet Accounts in System Preferences. This didn't work for me.

---

UPDATE: On Mac 1 (the one where both accounts were working) I later discovered secondary issue. Although I was able to received and send email with Gmail account A (custom domain) I wasn't able to send zip file attachments! See attached screenshot.

A further bug was that in the error message (as shown in the screenshot) shows, there isn't a space between the word "visit" and "https://" and so it thinks "visit" is part of the URL, so clicking on the link doesn't work!

---

UPDATE 2: after restarting Mac 1 it now is stuck in the cycle of asking me for my password for Gmail account A again. However, when I do enter my password, it is successful and I don't see the (null) error. But moments later it forgets it again. So, still a problem, but totally different behaviour to Mac 2.... at least on Mac 1 I can see all my old emails in Mail. On Mac 2 I have nothing!

Hey,

Last night I found this https://support.google.com/a/users/answer/7649685?hl=en using Exchange type account.

It works fine on my iOS, both iPhone and iPad.

Still for MacOS won't work the Exchange option, so I'll wait for some solution and using the browser instead.

At least I have the iOS Calendar updated so I'm not missing any appointments alerts.

Hope you can find this useful.

Good luck!

Hi.

Ok, This worked for me:

1) Delete all affected ACCOUNTS from System preferences -> Internet Accounts.

2) Go to https://myaccount.google.com/ and in the search bar above the page type "third-party" (without the quotation) than click on the first suggestion "Third-party apps with account access" and from there click on "macOS" from expanded menu click on remove access and click "OK".

3) Go back to System preferences -> Internet Accounts and re-add your account(s).

Hopefully this works for you.

It appears that there may be more than one variant to this problem.

I'm still having the same issue I was to start, but my error is different than the OP; I'm getting "Email Address Mismatch - The email address you entered does not match your account."

Is this the same error anyone who it's now fixed for was seeing? What about people who are still having problems--is this what you see, or something different?

In my case, I suspect it's related to the way my organization handles email aliases. Our fundamental login is based on initials, but the system defaults to a full name for email addresses, whether you prefer initials or not. Google may be feeding back the full.name@domain.com address for the user email even though the login is fn1@domain.com (or something like that).

I am also having the same problem after updating to 10.14.4.

I have 4 other google accounts for which authentication works correctly.

I also have a second Mac, and it fails for the same google account on both of my Macs.

I tried enabling 2FA on the unauthenticatable account, no luck.

I also tried setting my default browser to Chrome, but Mail.app just interacts directly with Safari.

I have multiple google accounts, one of which is a GSuite account, others are regular gmail accounts, and all are asking me for this. I googled this b/c I was concerned this may be some sort of malware causing this. The window that pops open does have a url that begins with https://accounts.google.com/signin/oauth/identifier?client_id= so it seems legit, however since it opens in a url which does not have a full browser heading, it is not possible to see information about the site. On my machine, Safari is not my default browser, however this site opens in Safari, which makes me more inclined - but not entirely convinced - it's legit.

I am having the exact same issue! AppleCare denied there is a problem - the customer support rep had zero clue what was going on. I am on the phone with Google Apps trying to flag this as a five alarm fire issue and hopefully someone can talk to the team at Apple. I cannot send email on my MacBook Pro - this is insane. I am calling AppleCare again after this.
