Messages Not Syncing with iPhone an Macbook Air 2019

my old mac failed me last may and i havent been using mac since then. i just got my new mac as a graduation present and have signed into my icloud for messages but they are STILL not syncing with my most recent messages that are on my iphone x. any suggestions on how to get this all synced up?

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.14

go in to message PREFERENCES and make sure you are signed in AND check box iCloud sync.

thank you so much! i updated to the newest software and that box showed up... it was not there before but once it showed up i clicked it and it started syncing!
