Time Machine won't backup after upgrade to 10.14.4

After upgrading to 10.14.4, I get the following error when trying to back up my iMac using Time Machine. "Time Machine did not back up because FileVault was encrypting or decrypting a disk. Backups will resume once FileVault finishes." It's been like this for over 26 hours. FileVault is not even turned on for this iMac drive.

I spend some time on the phone with support and we reset the SMC and the NVRAM and it's been working since then. Time Machine has backed up several times and I am not getting the error. Fingers x'd it stays that way.

Hi all

phoned apple support as suggested - after 2 hours I finally got one backup after they got me to start in safe mode and run a first aid. It found some error with “snapshot” deleted it and then when I started Mac again in normal mode I got one backup - but then it went back to the same issue.

I did notice that timemachine runs something called “snapshots” and wondered if this was the same thing that was causing the error??

any way - they wanted me to format my back up hard drive !? This was not going to happen! So I am now just waiting for them to find a fix. I think they don’t know yet what the issue is. I would suggest as many of you as possible phone and register your issue - they told me only a couple of other people (world wide) had the same issue!?

that would be “a couple of other people”, too many. the more users logging a case number with Apple, the tally would certainly rise.

yep ... I had done everything recommenced/listed by Apple care tech support above in this thread ... including safe boot, disk first aid etc. the engineers had my Apple care advisor walk me through reformatting my macOS hard disk followed by a fresh install - but the issue had not gone away. so the ball is now in their court.

we had run the tmdiagnostic script provided by the engineers, and the logs were forwarded to them for analysis. at least the MacOS engineers have now begun to take an interest and acknowledged that a tiny minority of users may have this issue, but I am still waiting for a fix?

my workaround described previously allows me to complete at least one good backup each time.

(furthermore the engineers had confirmed that there is no minimal wait time (like one hour) before the next time machine backup can be run again.)

I went through all the procedures again this afternoon. Why not? If what you've been doing doesn't work — do it again and again. So I did the hard shut-downs, reset SMC, reset NVRAM and PRAM, all per instructions, ran Utility First Aid on the internal HD, and on all three external backup discs . . . Waste of time. As before: one finished TM backup, then the usual message about waiting for the FileVault (which was never on) to finish. Arrrggg.

Apple seems to have a pattern of denial and delaying fixes.

Same here. Yes, warmd was at the top in Activity Monitor. But Safe Mode provided no solution (again). In Safe Mode I did not get a single finished backup. And then restarting normal also brought no finished backup. Only another boot after several hours off brought the earlier status back: one finished backup with a long preparation.

Tired of this problem.

I have also today started to have this issues with my iMac.

I have a late 2012 iMac running macOS 10.14.4. I've never used FileVault and use Seagate HD for my Time Machine back up's and until today they always worked OK but when trying to carry out a back up, I was given the same message everybody els has got about FileVault. I carried out the steps listed in this thread and it worked but I'v just tried again and the issues is back.

I've just filled out a feed back form via the Apple website detailing the issues I'm getting and including this chat thread in my feedback.

Let's hope that we get a fix soon.
