iPad virtual keyboard keeps popping up even though I use Bluetooth keyboard

So....I'm using third-party Bluetooth keyboard. iOS 12.1.4. Happens in Pages and in Notes, and, I imagine, other apps.

While my keyboard is connected and I'm able to type, the virtual keyboard keeps coming up and obstructing quite a bit of my screen. I can hit the key for the keyboard on either my Bluetooth keyboard or the virtual one and the virtual keyboard retreats, but it keeps coming back every few seconds, even when I'm typing on the Bluetooth.

I have tried restarting, but it keeps happening. I'd like the virtual keyboard to disappear when I'm using hardware keys.

The only thing I can think of which would cause this is while typing on the Bluetooth keyboard, the Bluetooth keyboard is losing connection via Bluetooth to the iPad. Also, it's possible if you've had the keyboard a while, there is some debris in the bring up the onscreen keyboard button, which is causing the keyboard to think you have pressed that key. Try a couple things.

  1. Use some canned air to clean the keys on the keyboard - If that doesn't the trick
  2. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the little circle with the i in it next to your keyboard and have your iPad forget the device. Then use the directions you received with the keyboard to pair it again and see if that solves this for you.
