Filevault stuck at "1 minute remaining"

I started a 256GB drive encrypting approximately eight hours ago - for the last three hours it has been stuck at "1 minute remaining".

Rebooting achieves nothing, and a "first aid" in Disk Utility returns no issues. However the SMART status of the drive is "not supported".

Is there anyway I can abort this encryption, or somehow kick start it?! Or do I just need to be more patient and let it run overnight?

The recovery key is cloud stored.

Thanks.

hmm.

some things that have worked:

1. Boot in safe mode. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

2. Turn off screen saver

3. Set screen to never sleep.

4. Turn brightness all the way down (so as not to damage your screen and let it run overnight)

or

reformat and reinstalled from a backup.
