migration of data from old mac air

i am trying to transfer from an old mac air using thundrebolt2 to a new mac air on thunderbolt 3. However, computers are not recognizing each other. they do recognize each other over wifi but too slow. Any ideas on whether thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 migration will work? Thanks.
