Apple AirPods connections to SanDisk Clip Sport Plus

I just purchased a set of Apple AirPods and a new Sandisk Clip Sport Plus, which I use to listen to audio books. The AirPods connect immediately to my old Sandisk Clip Sport Plus, however, though the new Sandisk Clip Sport Plus finds the AirPods, it will not connect. I have talked with SanDisk about the problem and, in fact, downloaded new firmware for the MP3 player to no avail. Still the AirPods will not connect to the SanDisk Clip Sport Plus's bluetooth. Any suggestions anyone?

If you have another BT device, such as your old Sandisk, in range when trying to pair to the new one the AirPods will auto connect to the old device first. Turn BT off on any other devices while pairing and try again.

I tried turning BT off on everything except the new SanDisk Clip Sport Plus and tied to connect but it will find it, just won’t connect. Just scrolls the name airpods across the screen of the Clip Sport Plus but never connects. I tried redownloading the firmware (per SanDisk support), but it made no difference since the firmware was already version 2.18 B01.
