'Configure in Extension Preferences' Touch Bar Issue Resolved

If you are like me, then you have a MacBook Pro with a Touchbar (mine is 2016 15").

Something that I did caused the app controls in my Touchbar to be replaced on the left-hand side with the text 'Configure in:' followed by a button that said 'Extension Preferences'. Clicking it would take me to the place where you manage your computer Extension Preferences.

This would show up literally everywhere, not just in System Preferences.

I spoke with Apple Support and found this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250010079 but found no answers (Apple was very helpful, but they didn't know why this was happening).

I am not 100% sure which of these things fixed it, so I wanted to list what I did in hopes that it helps some other people's similar problem.

This is what I did, which immediately fixed the issue:

  1. Go to your Activity Monitor and Force Stop the 'TouchBarServer' process.
  2. Go to your Keyboard preferences in System Preferences.
  3. For the dropdown that says 'Touch Bar shows', select 'App Controls', and check 'Show Control Strip'.

Other things I did:

  1. I also checked and unchecked 'Show Keyboard and Emjoji viewers in menu bar', though this didn't immediately fix it.
  2. I also unchecked and rechecked all of the extensions in my extension preferences, but that didn't immediately fix it.

I believe that it was the first three steps that actually fixed the issue, but you may need to do a combination of the above to make it work.

If this does not resolve the issue, you may want to consider if you installed any extensions or apps recently that have an impact on your TouchBar, I'd remove those and then go from there.
