Apple Security update 2019-002 issue

Hi, We tried to install security package trough terminal command line ( sudo softwareupdate -i -r ) but we got spinning wheel which ( finder not responding )and we ended up to do the hard shut down/reboot . so basically package didn't installed by its self and its not on App store either. we tried to install separate security package for Sierra OSX but that didn't help either. Also if I check on installations section under system report , I don't see any security updates 2019-002 that mean system didn't get that package yet. We tried with diffrent system but on same OSX which is Sierra in this case and same result.

Run disk Utility> first Aid on your Mac to check for errors, if it finds errors you will need to boot to your Recovery HD and run Disk Utility> first Aid from there. Did you also try downloading from here, Download Security Update 2019-002 (Sierra), once downloaded double-click to install.

I have had the security update take out 3 iMacs at my company. All had a black screen after the update downloaded. One of them could not be recovered at an Apple store- we had to purchase a new iMac. Even on that one, Disk First Aid showed the physical system was fine. The Mac couldn't finish bootup and the techs could not find a reason. For the other 2, using the recovery mode boot (Command-R) to Disk First Aid, downloading a new copy of OSX worked and the computers are back to normal. Safe Mode, PRAM reset both did not work. Users at our office don't knowingly have apps running at startup and have standard Mac apps with Office for Mac on their machines, so I don't think interfering 3rd party apps was the problem on those machines. If there is nothing wrong with the update, then my hypothesis - the download of the update did not complete properly due to a glitch in our internet connection. I suppose I proceed and I can likely recover the next ones - it is an interesting situation. Apple tech support has been very responsive - that is a big plus.

Did you check to see if there was anything in your Login Items that might be preventing the install.

Have you tried to install the update whilst in Safe Mode. Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

You could download this app, http://etrecheck.com. this will generate a report which you can post back here using the Additional Text button found in the Tools section at the bottom of these Reply windows. The report can help in diagnosing what might be that is preventing the install, no personal information is included in the report.

Nah not lucky, has you tried downloading the standalone update, once downloaded then double-click to star the installation.

You might also want to try, http://etrecheck.com run the app and it will generate a report that may help with diagnosing the problem you are having installing the update. Once the report is generated click on Share Report at the top of the page, this will copy it to your clipboard, to paste it into a reply on here click on the Additional Text button from the tools at the bottom of the window. The report does not contain any personal information.

If you shut down the computer using the power button and restart, will the install complete?

Have you tried installing in another admin account?

I would uninstall Intego. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files. Most long time posters recommend not using antivirus software or cleaning software such as CleanMyMac.

Intego Uninstall

I would also uninstall the Virus Barrier software using the Developer's uninstall instructions.

that doesn't work either because package still on startup loop and every couple hours users getting spinning wheel which we ended up to shutdown system manually. Apple released another security package 002 which causing the same thing an didn't fix the problem. I tried on my personal computer (no domain system )and same result. also I checked log file on Receipts and I couldn't find 2019-002 to see if installed by it self.

Thank you very much. I have removed a number of apps which I judge interefere with the machine at "low leveL" Intego has always been a problem. I have both "uninstalled" Virus Barrier, and used AppZap to remove what was left (more than I had anticipated). I have removed Little Snitch (although I like it) and also iStat Menus (which I also like) I have started up in Safe Mode (after dealing with the PRAM) and tried to install the Security Update downloaded in .dmg form. I am still stuck. When the "Restart" buttin is pressed in any "update" program (or indeed whenever I use the GUI) the machine stays at the same point, black screen, white (moving) cursor, and nothing else happens. However "sudo shutdown -r now" restarts the machine in the normal way.

I have also run Disk Utility on my system disk, and all is well. I have tried reinstalling the High Sierra combo., but unsurprisingly it refused to install (too many updates sine the original upgrade I suspect).

This becoming quite seriously annoying although the machine performs all other tasks as needed and (thankfully) still starts up in the morning as normal.

I am not keen on creating a new Admin ID, not having done this before.

Further ideas would be welcome

Thank you. I am pleased to know that a professional with multiple machines has been through this (not pleased for you, of course). I am not at home with the iMac which had this problem at the moment. I have managed to boot the machine several times after a hard shutdown, and even to restart using the Terminal commands, but no “ normal” restart ever leads to anything other than the black screen you mention.. The Security Update has been re-downloaded and still the restart problem persists.

As the machine in question is from 2009 I am seriously thinking of trading it in (giving it back) in exchange for a new one. If the new machine gives the same service, that will be pretty good for 21st century tech.
