By resetting iMovie preferences, I was able to reopen iMovie on my Mac for the first time since Apple's iMovie update on 3/21/19. But I still can't access my projects in iMovie. When I try to do that the spinning beach ball appears, iMovie fails to respond, and I am forced to Force Quit iMovie. What should I do now?

I called apple support. They too told me to boot up in safe mode, wait for everything to load, and immediately reboot in normal mode. iMovie then converted my incompatible files and opened my projects. Thanks for your help, and for coming to the right answer so quickly.

Try booting up in Safe Mode (see the Finder menu for instructions) and, after everything loads, immediately shut down and reboot in normal mode. Now see if iMovie will open your projects.
