erase HDD of old iMac
I am having trouble erasing my old iMac. The erase button is grayed out in Disk Utility

You have to boot from the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup), open Disk Utility and erase there.
Also, have you completed ALL the steps in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065
