Icloud problems

Hello I previously had an iPhone backed all my photos up to it before I sold my phone and now I’ve got a new iPhone I thought by backing my photos up and using the same Apple ID that is have those photos back or at least on the cloud but they’ve just gone. Just wondering if there is any way that I can get all those photos back as there are really sentimental. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.
