As a student, I'm looking constantly for work. However, I have a flip phone, and I can't text easily from it. I'd like to use my macbook pro [High Sierra] to send messages to these people, however they're not registered with iMessage, and therefore it makes it a lot more difficult to contact them.

You may want to look into one of the free or paid VOIP services that support SMS. Google Voice is one.
What would you have us suggest? Without an SMS capable device such as an older and gently-used iPhone or with an Android of your choice, then you’ll need access to some sort of an SMS portal through an app or through your carrier (and this assumes you have SMS access available through your carrier), or some other means to contact your intended recipients. macOS does not not have generic SMS access in-built; it’s all via iMessages and iCloud and related support. Years ago, some carriers allowed email to their subscribers’ telephone numbers, but I’ve not used this feature in many years.
