My son wants to send / receive text messages on his iPad. His friends have Moto mobile phones. He has his own Apple ID. He does NOT have a mobile phone. I have an iPhone. What is the easiest solution?

Buy him a phone.
iPads do not connect to the voice channel of the cellular network and cannot send SMS on there own.
A work around would be use a messeging app available on android and iOS.
He can use a messaging application such as FaceBook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Telegram. His friends will need to have the same app on their phones.
Without a companion iPhone there is NO WAY you son can send cellular text messages to MOTO phones. NO OTHER solution is available other than what has already been suggested. He either needs an iPhone or he needs to use Apps.
That's all there is.

Understood. Thank you. I did see some posts about having multiple Apple IDs on an iPhone so I was wondering if I could add his Apple ID to my iPhone then establish text forwarding from iPad through iPhone. However not sure if this is feasible and if so, how to implement.

They all want to use their messaging functions, not load other apps. Any other suggestions?
iPhones are single user devices.
They do not support using multiple Apple IDs on one device, it will cause headaches.
Actually, whatever you’ve read about using multiple ID’s on an iPhone would have been totally wrong. They are one ID devices only.
