Mouse cursor problem on Safari, not turning into pointing finger on links

Hi everyone,

It's been a few days now that I have had a mouse cursor problem on Safari. My mouse cursor does not change to the pointing finger when hovering over a link, the cursor remain as the arrow. The links work once I click on them but it is very inconvenient. A consequence of this problem is that the disappearing control commands on video players do not show up unless I click in the middle of the screen (which pauses the video), then the commands show up. The strangest thing is that the problem only happens on new tabs on Safari, the first tab works perfectly fine (the cursor changes to the pointing finger over links).

I have consulted many old topics, advising to try on a Guest profile and in Safe mode.

As a Guest : the problem does not happen at all, on any new tab.

In Safe mode : the problem happens exactly the same as after a normal launch of my session.

The problem only occurs on Safari. Chrome and Mozilla do not display this problem of cursor once I open new tabs. If somebody as any advice to help me locating what in my personal settings is causing the problem I would very much appreciate it.

Here are the specs of my MacBook Air :

MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017)

Processor 1,8 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 8 Go 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 Mo

If you need any additional information I would gladly provide it. Thank you in advance for considering this request.

Best regards,

MA

Same problem here, after 10.14.4 official update. I immediately reported a feedback with feedback assistant after the update.

Now I have installed the 10.14.5 beta 1 and 2, hoping that was solved... but with no success on beta 10.14.5 (18F108f) and safari 12.1.1 (14607.2.3) or Safari Technology Preview 12.2 release 79.

I'm glad to see other people have the same problem; now I'm trying the hulliefromnl workaround and it seem working.

Before that, I found another workaround when the issue appears:

-go to the left side and wait the pop up of the side bar

-move a little bit the cursor over the sidebar

-go to the right (the side bar goes away)

-now the issue is gone and you have back the mouseover function (only on the active panel)

Except for a configuration profile and an application crashing, there are no problems.

System Preferences > Profiles (at the bottom)

Click Profiles. This will open a window. Is the Profile installed a known one?

Recent update macOS 10.14.4 made few changes.

If the issue here is related to that I would wait until the next update is released.

System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click

Try toggling and adjusting options.

When mouse pointer is on a hyperlink, slight three finger touch on the trackpad should show the preview.

Does it work?

Hello, thank you for your reply,

I am not using any style sheet on Safari.

Do you think including the second line of code you mentioned would fix the issue? If yes, could you help me finding where I can copy that line, I am not very familiar with these tools.

The weird thing is that my cursor acts perfectly fine on the first tab I use when I launch Safari, and it remains this way as long as this tab is opened. Any new tab will be affected by the cursor problem. Can that information help you in any way?

Apr 5, 2019 7:39 AM in response to maxime.andre

You can enter the following in a plain text file, and saving it as pointer.css on your Desktop.

a {
  cursor: pointer !important;
}

In Safari Preferences : Advanced : Style sheet, click None Selected, and then select Other… and navigate to your Desktop and choose the pointer.css file. This wil have an immediate effect on Safari — an may, or may not resolve your cursor issues.

Apr 5, 2019 8:25 AM in response to VikingOSX

Thank you very much for the detailed tutorial.

I followed all your instructions precisely and it did not fix the issue. However I am not sure I did it properly. Indeed, I tried using the CSS code line you gave me to "prevent the hand cursor over links" (default), I just wanted to see if I was able to make the CSS work. It did not do anything to my cursor. I'm confused because I followed every step you described and encountered no problem at all.

Thank you for the help anyway!

Apr 6, 2019 2:11 PM in response to maxime.andre

I'm experiencing the same issue: cursor pointer is not changing to hand when hovering over a link in safari. I'm om MacOS 10.14.4.

I noticed when I set "open new tab with" or "open new window with" in General settings Safari to "empty page", starting new browser pages from here, they do display the hand pointer.

@maxime.andre can you test this and see if it works?

Apr 6, 2019 2:41 PM in response to hulliefromnl

Hello and thank you for you reply,

Wow it actually fixed the problem, at least partially. It looks like the issue comes from the "Favourites" page when you open a new tab, as every other setting worked perfectly fine (Top sites, Home page, Empty Page, Same Page).

It's just a shame that we can't use the favourites page, I'm very used to it, I hope a fix comes along in the next update (I'm glad I'm not the only one!).

Thank you for your help, at least we know where the problem lies now!
