Which 2019 iMac i5 vs i9 for Final Cut Pro X?

Hi there,

I currently have a late 2015 27" iMac with a 2TB fusion drive and i5 3.3 GHz. I am going to buy a new 2019 27" iMac (unless I get convinced otherwise) and I want to start using Final Cut Pro X to learn to do video editing (for my retirement job). I'm also an amateur photographer and I'll be getting into drone photography. So now for me question:

Will there be a big enough performance jump to get the i9 over the i5? $400 worth? I know it will be faster, but is there going to be enough performance increase to justify the cost? I'll upgrade the RAM myself as I always do.

Also, is the Vega 48 worth $450 upgrade over the 580 pro?

BTW, i haven't found any new YouTube reviews discussing the questions above, if anybody knows of any please point me that direction?

Thanks! Mark

All Apple's prices are ridiculous. They charge what they charge simply because they can. Just bear in mind that you're stuck with whatever storage you choose to purchase. No one ever regrets getting too much.

The performance difference between the two CPUs are small. You need to compare the two side-by-side. If you do that, you are certain to notice a difference, but it's up to you to determine if it's worth the additional cost. Again, no one ever regrets buying a more capable CPU.

Configure and use 8 GB to start with. You may determine that it's more than adequate. It's very easy to determine if a Mac's performance is being limited by available memory. Please read Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support. Run whatever programs you will typically need to run. If the "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" your Mac will benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't. It's that simple.

You did not ask but the first consideration should be all flash storage: 2 TB.

All other considerations are secondary, although if you must choose between an upgraded CPU or GPU, I'd choose the i9 CPU.

I pay no attention to reviews. They are all equally worthless. Go to an Apple Store and use both, side by side. Decide for yourself. Spend as much time as you need.

FWIW, I agree with John that an SSD is the first thing you should choose. Even a 1TB SSD. The next thing I would choose is the 8GB RAM option then buy at least an additional 24GB of third-party RAM. Then the CPU and then the GPU.

Honestly though, no one can tell you what an addition 10% or 50% or more of an increase in performance is worth to you.

FWIW, if you really want to get into serious video editing/production,

the more cores and horsepower in the CPU the better. Generally, this

impacts video work more so than graphics cards.

Graphics cards are more important for things like 3D rendering and

very complex realtime animation. They can help with photo work,

but only if the app leverages the GPU. Some do and some don't.

The only other thing that graphics cards may impact is the number and

resolution of external displays.

Definitely not buying extra RAM from Apple, I have always upgraded that myself, this will be my 3rd iMac.

Part of the problem is nobody is comparing the new 15 and the i9 performance against each other. I know that the i9 would win, but the margin is the most important thing I'm thinking.

Is a SSD at 512GB enough with t3 storage?

Thanks!

Thanks, I know the CPU is important, i9 with 8 cores and 16 threads is nice and powerful, but is the 6 cores/threads of the new i5 enough?

I'm pretty sure that I'm going to go with the i9, I have always taken the lower processor path with my previous iMacs. It's not a about the cost, it's the return of value against the cost. That is why I won't go the Vega 48 route, nobody seems to point out that value over the RX580.

Thanks!

Thanks John! Part of what I'm trying to determine is the benefit that the i9 will provide for Final Cut Pro X and Motion, I will probably go with the i9, most of the data that has been coming out of reviews are positive, but no reviews yet on the i5, and I'm guessing there won't be any for awhile. I have always taken the low route on the processor, and this upgrade should last me 5+ years i hope. Also, I'm guessing the 1TB SSD, although there are some that think that 512GB would be adequate. Now the question is the Vega 48, I don't know what that gives me over the RX580.

Definitely will start with the 8GB of RAM, but I will upgrade that with an extra 32GB, dirt cheap right now. Thanks for the insight, I'll keep looking for the elusive answer that I'm looking for!
