Using iPad in car with mount in summer?

I have a 6th generation iPad that I would like to use in my car for navigation, etc.

There are tons of mounts available and tons of examples online of people doing this but one thing that concerns me is heat. I’ve read the official environmental requirements and it seems like it would be really easy for it to overheat under even normal use.

Am I being overly concerned? I like to hit a lot of estate sales and the like in the summer and having an iPad with cellular data access seems ideal.

The operating temps of an iPad are as follows

  • Operating ambient temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
  • Nonoperating temperature: –4° to 113° F (–20° to 45° C)

I don’t know where your ‘summer’ is at, but around here my car will be over 113 after sitting in the sun all day in the summer. And even the 95 degrees is easily obtained inside a car with the outside temp being as low as 70. Which means that it could be frequently be exposed above it’s operating and non operating temperature. Not to mention the wear and tear this is on your battery.

THe iPad has the same functionality as your phone, and honestly your phone may have more since it has other optimized functions for its portability (the wallet app among others). The only thing the iPad may have going for it is a larger screen. But that is also part of the challenge in mounting that large screen in such a way that it is protected vs using an iPhone and the multitude of mounts available for phones.

I would not recommend leaving your iPad in your car, not just for the heat, but also the temptation for someone to take a hammer to your window and steal it.

My suggestion, if you want to use an iPad, buy a mini and take it with you when you leave the car.

Or buy a much less expensive Garmin or the such and let it do the navigation. Or use your smart phone if you have one.

I appreciate the reply, but that’s not really an answer to my question. I’m fully aware of the possibility of theft, but clearly people are using these in their vehicles. I’m hoping people with a setup like this will give their experiences.

I already have both an iPhone and a Garmin, but was hoping the additional functionality of an iPad would be an improvement over either.
