iTunes taking up too much space on MacBook Pro

I am almost running out of space on my MacBook Pro and I noticed that iTunes is nearly 20.77GB. I do not need nearly that much music nor do I ever listen to that much music. I have various playlist and those playlist take up 10GB of room and that is a huge overestimate. What happens if I just delete the contents found in the "Apple Music" folder? This can be found at: username>Music>iTunes >iTunes Media>Apple Music.

I think I "added" playlist via Apple Music and those playlist update each week. The new songs were always automatically downloaded to my MacBook but the old songs that are no longer currently part of the Apple Music playlist stay on my MacBook. These old songs have been accumulating over the past year and take up way too much room on my computer.

Can I simply delete the contents of the Apple Music folder and my MacBook will only start re-downloading the songs that I still have in my iCloud iTunes library?

Hi horner8,

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities. I understand that you'd like to free up space on your Mac, focusing on the iTunes category.

To free up space on your Mac by deleting music from iTunes, you can delete the songs directly from your iTunes library. You can find the steps under "Delete items in iTunes" in this article: Delete music, movies, and TV shows from your device.

You can also take a look here for other ways to free up space on your Mac: How to free up storage space on your Mac.

Have a great day!

You might consider doing what I did when I got my first MacBook Air. With a small drive, I didn't have room for my 80GB music library the way I did on my MBPro with a 1TB drive. So I moved my music library to an external hard drive. See this article: Since I had an iPhone I just didn't have to bother putting music on my computer. But since I sometimes found myself low on phone battery but a well charged computer, I started keeping a small amount of music on the computer. I'd trade it in and out.
