My iMac 1Tb has suddenly slowed to a snails pace - worked fine two days ago - now takes 20 mins just to switch on - when screen dims it takes another 10 minutes to wake up. Storage says there’s 760gb still available - did just update to latest iOS a couple of days ago. Please help been trying to sort this out for 2 days reaching point of throwing it out the window.

Run DriveDX to check the health of your hard drive. If it reports as healthy, then post a screenshot or report showing all the "Health Indicators".
To determine if there's any 3rd party software that might be affecting performance download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply.
Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:
I would also suggest to check: Utility, Monitor activity, memory, and see how memory use your open app. Close the Biggest.
Otherwise check your cache memory, with external tool as suggested here.
