Mail app crashing after 5 seconds

So i work for a universities IT support team, and i had the following issue:

The customers password expired, and for some reason when we updated the password, the mail app did not started syncing, so i said lets delete the said account (it is an exchange mail account) from the internet accounts and add it again.

After we added the account again and tried launching the mail app, it has opened, and seemed like it was fine, but after 10 seconds it quit unexpectedly. I have tried opening again, but the same.

I had some troubleshooting experience int this topic, and also checked online, tried the following things:

  • Delete com.apple.mail.plist file from ~/library/preferences
  • Delete V2 folder from ~/library/mail
  • Delete the saved application state for the mail app
  • Start the mail app in safe mode
  • Delete com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.mail-shared.plist from ~/library/containers/com.apple.mail/data/library/preferences/

That is about it, after each troubleshoot i tried launching the app again, but the same thing happened, it crashed unexpectedly.

The customer is using a Macbook pro with Yosemite and doesn't want to upgrade because he has some licensed software that is only compatible with yosemite.

I am really kind of out of ideas. I would reinstall the mail app separately, but i have read in other threads that that is not possible.

Any idea on how to get the mail app working again would be greatly appreciated.

Upgrading might fix the problem if it is caused buy corrupt files.

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.
