Hi all, I have IMac late 2017 21.5 3.5 ghz and I'm wondering, can I use a pci-e slot on the mother board to install a new ssd and keep the standart fusion drive? So for example I'll install a 500gb pci sdd and keep the fusion drive, so total I'll have 1tb hdd and 500gb ssd. Is it possible?

Another thing to consider, if you are going to open up your
21.5" iMac, you might as well upgrade your RAM as well.
2017, 21.5 inch iMacs return the capability of socketed RAM
instead of soldered in as in previous versions.
970 possibly, 980 no, something is supposedly whacky in the 980's firmware that it wont allow boot, but I think you can use it for storage.
So, the picture above is iMac 21.5 2017 and it has a pci slot.
As I've found online, if you have a fusion drive installed on your iMac that means that you have a pci slot.
if you choose the correct model it should show you its insides

Seems that here nobody has tried to do the same.
Be aware that replacing any PCIe SSD on a Mac is going to
require complete disassembly and if you have Apple care on your 2017
it will void your warranty.
Of course I'll do that. That's my point: Open it once and do the maximum upgrade.
