"can't download the software because of a network problem" in Boot Camp Assistant High Sierra/Mojave

Started off on High Sierra, later Mojave (exact same problems):

  • Downloaded x64 US-EN October-updated Windows 10 ISO
  • Start the Boot Camp Assistant, select continue, select ISO from Downloads or Desktop (no difference) and set partition size (no difference)
  • Click next, boom, 0 progress bar busts out with "can't download the software because of a network problem bootcamp"

Tried on WiFi, tried on cable. Of course I have a perfectly fine fiber connection I'm using on the laptop at the same time ... I have googled left and right. I tried different ISO locations, different partition sizes. I updated to Mojave. Nothing seems to help - why can't I just walk through this process?

This is by design.

Grrr, why can't this simple download step function normally, this feels so buggy :( .

If Brigadier works, then your Network configuration is reasonable. You may end up looking packet captures to find what BCA is sending out and getting back, on the wire.

So I am looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Camp_(software)#Boot_Camp_Support_Software_(for_Windows)_Version_History trying to find a good version and see I need version 6.1.6655 or above ... I then try my luck on https://support.apple.com/downloads/boot%2520camp%2520support%2520software%25206 which has a terrible search filter/query standard but ok ... and find nothing but old versions. Great so I can't find a manual work around :/ .

Also unless line 3 is important (I'm guessing no since I reach the final hop) this works too;

Hosts file seems normal. I can run local/web applications just fine and have changed nothing specific in this regard before trying the boot camp assistant.

MappleTondev$ cat /etc/hosts
##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
##

I have downloaded and run Brigadier:

MappleTondev$ python2 Brigadier.py

So now I am looking at:

But I can't seem to point the Boot Camp Assistant to this dmg file ... does it have a default location it picks it up from I can place it (maybe in a standard/default folder name)?

Apr 23, 2019 7:12 AM in response to MappleTondev

@LonerT, found another thread (somewhat) related and placed the WindowsSupport.dmg file in a Library/Application Support/BootCamp* folder (I had to create the BootCamp folder). After I run the Boot Camp Assistant ... it still fails with the darn message and deletes the .dmg file in that folder (leaving the folder intact).
